Natural Gas Vehicle growth has exceeded expectations in 2010 in Thailand. Although the NGV target’s expansion 2010 for NGVs is 212,000 units there are currently 218,459 units as at the end of November. PTT Plc says that by end of 2014 the targeted number of accumulated NGVs will be increased to almost 300,000 units. The number of filling stations has also grown, from 391 at the end of 2009 to 426.
Assisting the transition to natural gas are favourable fuel prices based on energy equivalence. Early November comparisons showed natural gas to cost about 24% of Gasohol 95 (E 20) and only 56% of the price for LPG Auto.
Punnachai Footrakul, vice-president of PTT Plc, attributes some of the growth to uptake by large vehicles, such as Hino and Isuzu, and says that PTT hopes natural gas sales will rise to make up 14% of the total fuel used in transport in the next five years, from 10% currently, according to a recent Bangkok Post report.
Large vehicles such as buses and trucks now make up 16% of total NGVs.
